German Purity Law (of Beer)
The oldest food act throughout the world which is still relevant – the Reinheitsgebot. In april, 1516, Duke William the 4th, enacted the law. The only ingredients permitted to brew beer had to be barley, hop and malt. Yeast was added later on.
Brewing beer cheaply on themselves thousands of people had been intoxicated and poisoned by using ergot. So only hop became a main ingredient permitted to conserve and give aroma to the beer.
